Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) is a term used to describe a regulatory system for control of pollution from certain industrial processes and activities, which is based on an operator demonstrating that:
- The Best Available Techniques (BAT) are being, or will be, used to prevent and minimize pollution from the installation; and
- No pollution takes place that causes significant adverse impact on the receiving environment. Pollution Prevention embraces a wide scope of activities including that:
- All appropriate preventative measures are taken against pollution;
- Waste production is avoided or, where waste is produced, it is recovered or where this is technically or economically impossible, it is disposed of while avoiding or reducing impacts on the environment;
- Energy is used efficiently;
- The necessary measures are taken to prevent environmental accidents and limit their consequences;
- The necessary measures are taken upon definitive cessation of activities to avoid any pollution risk and return the site of operation to a satisfactory state.
